Culture, nature, gastronomy and events – Koper’s biggest assets for an active vacation in the Mediterranean

Experiences, sustainability and integration are the main principles of the tourism development plan of the Municipality of Koper (MOK) until 2025, which includes active vacations in the Mediterranean, discovering culture and nature, gastronomy and events among the key tourist products that Koper can offer as a tourist destination. Since IstraTerra specializes in providing authentic experiences of the region’s natural and cultural heritage to anyone visiting Istria, including the area of Koper, the 2025 development and marketing strategy of Koper is a tremendous boost to our efforts to unite local providers and provides new opportunities for tourists to explore our “back yard” in a truly authentic and active way.
The planned direction of the development of the Koper wider area represents one of the most important documents for the tourist agency IstraTerra, since the orientation of the local community in the tourism sector plays a key role in the realization of our mission. The new strides in the development of the tourism sector, not only in Koper, but in Slovenian Istria as a whole, are reflected in Koper’s and its wider area’s new identity through its renewal and its new infrastructure, which has allowed it to gradually evolve from an industrial town into an attractive tourist destination. At the strategy’s unveiling, the head of the Tourist Organization of Koper, mag. Tamara Kozlovič said the following: “Today, we can rightfully be proud of our achievements and can truly say that we have succeeded. But out work has only just started.” Kozlovič is convinced that the strategy of tourism development puts Koper on a higher level and at the same time opens up a new path.
“We agree with the assessment that tourism is one of the key industries in our area, but above all, it carries with it immense potential with the planned direction for development” as explained by IstraTerra Director Urška Križman Vižintin. Vižintin ads that the strategy that steers the development of local tourism in the direction of active integration of providers, cultural and natural heritage, gastronomy and sustainable development is also a confirmation of the direction of IstraTerra’s activities: “The support of the local community is of great importance for our work, since MOK identified the marketing of Koper as a tourist destination as one of its key objectives. With the new strategy, the path to new markets is much smoother than it would be with the scattered promotion of individual tourism providers. We are already seeing the first results of the first steps toward actively marketing Koper as an active and multifaceted destination for all seasons, and I believe that we can be even more successful in the future, if we work together.”
The strategy for the development of tourism in Koper is not yet in its final form, as there will be public meetings to discuss it until 22 September. Until then, it can be optimized through dialog, deliberation and the active participation of all those who are involved in local tourism, but its main emphasis already puts it on the right track – the positioning of Koper as the main link between the city and the countryside, as an entry point into Slovene Istria and as the starting point for discovering the whole of Istria and Slovenia.
