Are truffles really an aphrodisiac?

Even if you don’t know much about hunting, you probably know that it requires you to be very, very quiet. Whether you’re hunting for deer, wild boar, or fish, being very, very quiet is of the utmost importance. Since it would be really difficult to tell a story in complete silence, we at IstraTerra prefer hunting for truffles to hunting animals. This way, we can have fun and chat along the way, without bothering the hunter and his assistant.

In collaboration with the Tourist Association (TZ) of Portorož, we recently hosted a group of Austrian and German journalists and bloggers. During their stay, which lasted several days, our visitors had a fascinating introduction to our beautiful Istria. “We wanted to show them all the diversity of Slovenian Istria – the bustling centers as well as the more peaceful rural areas. Despite their many differences, the urban and rural parts of Istria have some things in common. Both have a variety of different things to offer, no matter what you are looking for you will find it in Istria – a rich cultural heritage, exceptional nature, the local cuisine and various opportunities for an active vacation for those who like to be always on the move”, said Lea Šuligoj, the spokeswoman for the Tourist Association (TZ) of Portorož, adding that hunting for truffles is a perfect example of how Istria has ability to cater to different tastes.

Truffle hunter Zdenko Kocjančič and his four-legged friend Liza took us for a walk around the hinterland of Piran, on the land that surrounds the organic farm Forte near St. Peter. While Zdenko and Liza were hunting for truffles, we chatted with a group of German visitors, until we found what we were looking for. It was exhilarating! “That incredible feeling that you get when you find truffles is something that I will never get tired of”, said Jerneja Tratnik Lacovich, storyteller at IstraTerra. The experience was even more authentic, because we made the fuži (traditional Istrian pasta) ourselves. When you shave some nice fresh truffle on your pasta … yummy… No lunch is ever really complete without some good wine. For this occasion, we chose Malvasia, Refosco and Chardonnay from the Černe winery from Ankaran. We also tasted organic pickled vegetables and cheese from the Forte organic farm and enjoyed the day to the fullest.

Would you like to join us on our next truffle hunting trip?  We can make the fuži ourselves, ask our cook to tag along and have lunch under the trees (show cooking), or we can drive to one of the many Istrian restaurants in our idyllic rural locations. Whether you decide to go on the truffle hunt that is part of our regular offer or to customize the trip to your needs and wishes, one thing is clear: the fuži taste better if you find the truffles yourself. As for the answer to the question in the title, only our truffle hunter knows it and he is keeping it to himself (for now). 😉
